Speech of host
of the function Mr. John Caputo OAM
Mr. John Caputo OAM, President of the Italian National Day Celebration Committee
As President and on behalf of the Italian National Day Celebration Committee, I
would like to welcome Premier Barry O'Farrell MP,Our special guest, His Eminence
Cardinal George Pell.
Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Pell to one of the Church’s most senior
positions in Rome and we are particularly honoured that he has accepted our
invitation to allow us to farewell him as he goes to the Vatican, so very close,
one might say, to our former homeland Italy.
We are extremely proud that not only an Australian, but an Australian of his
standing and his affinity with the Italian Community, has been called upon to
the high Office of Prefect for the Economy for the Holy See at the Vatican.
This position ranks on a par with the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro
Parolin, an Italian, second behind the Pope in the church’s hierarchy.
"No Australian
cardinal has been appointed to such a senior Vatican role before".
Mr. John Caputo
said Cardinal Pell's interest in and support for young people, marriage and
families has been demonstrated not only in his preaching and many public
statements on these matters, but also in his involvement in founding the
Australian campus of the international John Paul II Institute for Marriage and
the Family;
He was involved in leading pilgrimages of young Australians to World Youth Days
and the twenty-third World Youth Day was held in Sydney in 2008.
This formed the
largest gathering in Australia's history. Over 110,000 registered pilgrims from
more than 170 nations attended, together with 123,000 registered pilgrims from
Australia.
Cardinal Pell has always been close to the Italian Community, but beyond that,
we know that he has been at the forefront of actively supporting
Multiculturalism and interfaith harmony.
We shall always remember the occasions when His Eminence joined us in
celebrating the Italian National Day, particularly allowing us to celebrate
mass, for the occasion, at Saint Mary’s Cathedral.
The Italian Community of New South Wales is greatly appreciative of the ongoing
support Cardinal Pell has shown to us and his departure will leave a vast gap in
Australian public life, to which he has been a major contributor for decades.
On behalf of everyone here today, I would sincerely like to congratulate you and
wish you every success in your new role at the Vatican.
Speech of Hon. Tony Pasin Federal Member for Barker South Australia
The Hon. Tony Pasin Federal Member for Barker SA
On behalf of the Australian Government I thank President John Caputo OAM and members of The Italian National Day Celebration Committee for their invitation to attend today’s celebration to honour and farewell His Eminence George Cardinal Pell AC.
It is a great privilege for me to be here representing the Prime Minster, the Hon. Tony Abbott MP who has asked that I convey his sincere apologies for being unable to join you here today.
His Eminence has made a significant contribution to the Catholic Church in Australia, to our national interfaith dialogue and our society more generally and his appointment by the Holy Father to the position of Prefect for the Economy of the Holy See is truly an immense honour.
In this role His Eminence will occupy the most senior role ever held by an Australian cardinal and it comes as no surprise to me, nor the Prime Minister, that this appointment has been widely acclaimed.
Your Eminence you have dedicated your life to the Catholic Church and you leave behind an Archdiocese that has extended its work dramatically in recent years.
I know that in the years to come, through your new role your Eminence you will continue to add to your long legacy of selfless service and further the good work of the Catholic Church across the globe.
Your Eminence I congratulate you on your appointment and I extend my personal best wishes together with those of the Prime Ministers as you embark on this your new role.
You should your Eminence begin it in the knowledge that your Nation has taken great pride in your appointment.
