Official Launch of South Asian Muslim Association of Australia
South Asian Muslim Association of
Australia (SAMAA) has been launched at a ceremony of Senior Citizens Eid
Get-together in Sydney on 14 Oct 2007. The function was attended by over 200
people who were briefed about the objectives of SAMAA. A panel discussed all
short and long term tasks which SAMAA aims to undertake. The immediate objective
is to serve the elderly of South Asian Muslim community living in various areas
of Sydney through a team of volunteers. Needs of elderly may include
transporting them to mosques for Friday prayers, to doctors, for shopping etc,
arranging occasional picnics for them in various areas of Sydney and provide
other care as may be needed. In long term SAMAA aims to establish a retirement
village facility.
SAMAA requests all Muslim elderly from the subcontinent to register with it. It
also requests younger men and women to register as volunteers. Volunteers may
also benefit from this programme by requesting the elderly to teach their
children Quran, Urdu etc.
