MINISTER MEETS WITH NSW CONSULAR CORPS TO TALK ABOUT IMPORTANCE OF CULTURAL DIVERSITY

The Minister for Citizenship and Communities Hon.Victor Dominello addresses a meeting of the NSW Consular Corps in the Governor Macquarie Tower on Wednesday, 10 April 2013. The Minister for Citizenship and Communities Victor Dominello spoke to the Consular Corps of NSW today about how Consuls and the NSW Government can work together to sustain and maintain cultural diversity in NSW.

Dean of the Consular Corps, His Excellency Alvaro Barba, the Consul-General of Uruguay, invited Mr Dominello to speak to the 50 Consuls at a Consular Corps gathering in Sydney. Mr Dominello told the meeting that multiculturalism is one of the state’s greatest assets. “We strongly value our multicultural communities because our state’s cultural diversity is a key part of our identity,” he said. “With more than 40 per cent of people here having at least one parent born overseas and 260 languages spoken in NSW, the NSW Government understands the importance of inter-culturalism – diverse communities being able to live in harmony. “That is why the NSW Government is committed to engaging with our multicultural communities. “The NSW Government wants to utilise the expertise, knowledge and experience of the Consuls-General to further improve that engagement.”

Dean of the Consular Corps, His Excellency Alvaro Barba said today’s conference was useful to assist the various multicultural communities in NSW preserve their heritage, culture and language. “This exchange of ideas will improve the already good relations between the Consular Corps and the NSW Government, for the benefit of all citizens in NSW,” His Excellency Mr Barba said.
